The long awaited Sri Lanka Cricket’s Premier League tournament will finally be called play on August 10 and the cricketing carnival will end on August 31 with the finals. Sri Lanka Cricket and Somerset Ventures Entertainment signed a contract recently and the tournament will be played on similar lines to the Indian Premier League that is now in progress in India.
Cricket fans in Sri Lanka who are yearning for this slap-bang style of cricket, will now be able to watch some of the finest cricketers in this format showing their prowess in this tournament. The ICC’s Twenty20 World Cup tournament has been penciled to be played in September in Sri Lanka and this tournament in August should be a good work out for some of the cricketers who will be featuring in the World Cup Twenty20.
The SLC Premier League was originally signed by D.S. de Silva’s Interim Committee and was to be played last year. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India refused to release their players and the tournament was stalled.
But the new Sri Lanka Cricket, headed by Upali Dharmadasa and its Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga kept pegging and it is to their credit that SLC’s Premier League has been finally signed, sealed and delivered.
