Acting Leader of the UNP Karu Jayasuiya has requested IGP Mahinda Balasuriya

Acting Leader of the UNP, MP Karu Jayasuiya has requested IGP Mahinda Balasuriya to summon the news editors of The Island and the ITN for the investigation into the death by self-immolation of UNP supporter Rienzie Algama on Tuesday.

Jaysuriya, in a letter addressed to the IGP, says that a newscast by the ITN and a news report that appeared in The Island of July 26 said that Algama had made a statement to the effect that the UNP would never get out of its present crisis while its incumbent leader Ranil Wickremesinghe stayed in that post and it was high time that Wickremesinghe stepped down making way for the youth and upcoming leaders.

Jayasuriya says that this statement reported by the ITN and The Island was different from those published by other media organisations. "These matters of contradictory nature arouse suspicions and they cause an injustice to Mr. Algama. Therefore, this matter should be investigated. I therefore, kindly request you to summon the news editors of the ITN and The Island before the commencement of investigations into the death of Mr Algama," Jayasuriya says in the letter.
